Choosing the right maternity outfit can often prove a difficult task. Use these simple tips to dress for success.
Maternity fashion can be a very frustrating thing. Finding maternity apparel that both fit and look good becomes harder than ever after one has added 20 or 40 pounds and their belly has swelled to an un-ignorable size. But despite the difficulties, there are some maternity fashion mistakes that are inexcusable. Being pregnant does not mean one has to stop dressing the way they want. Here are the dos and don’ts of maternity outfits.
Maternity Fashion "Dos"
- Mix and match: Choose clothes that can be combined into various different outfits and styles. This way one will not get bored of wearing the same thing.
- Wear bold jewelry: Pregnancy is the time to bust out those eye-catching chandelier earrings and bold single stone necklaces. Bold jewelry spices up the long, simple and elegant dresses that look best on mothers-to-be.
- Buy some wraps: A few brightly colored shawl wraps are great to have during pregnancy. They can be worn as scarves and serve to accent your outfits, just like jewelry.
- Go for the sexy dress: Maternity designers have a wide selection of evening dresses meant to show off a woman's newly acquired curves. A low-bust little black dress is a great maternity buy for wear during cocktail parties and special occasions.
- Invest in comfortable footwear: Get a pair of comfortable casual shoes as well as a pair of low-heeled dress shoes. As ones belly grows, their center of gravity shifts, meaning it’s time to put away the stilettos.
- Remember the basics: While it’s good to keep ones style up when out, remember to buy some casual tees for wearing around the house. New underwear and stretchy pants too.
- Use splashes of bold color: Especially ones that match a woman's eyes, hair or complexion. This will call attention to ones face and will not add anymore to their swollen belly.
Maternity Fashion "Don’ts"
- Shop by size: Fit is a better measuring stick for what’s gonna look good. Because of the irregular shape the body takes during pregnancy, waist size doesn’t mean the dress will fit well around ones shoulders or arms. Try clothes out and then decide.
- Wear your husband’s clothes: This is just an attempt to hide a woman's body during pregnancy, and it's guaranteed not to work. Better to wear maternity clothes that fit you and are made specifically for pregnant women than to look drab and blocky and still pregnant in a husband's outfits.
- Hide your belly: Don’t wear oversized clothes or fluffy sweaters or cumbersome jackets with the intention of hiding ones belly. Pregnancy should be about celebrating motherhood and tastefully showing off the gift the woman is expecting.
- Wear things that are too small: If you’re are now overflowing out of this or that piece of clothing, get rid of it, or put it in the closet until ones pregnancy is over. Clothes that are too small on you will be uncomfortable and unflattering.
- Wear bright patterns if you’re big: Go for simple patterns and single-color, elegant dresses. These can be accented with jewelry and other accessories, without calling attention to a woman's size.
